Description
Paper seems to be an indispensable item in a person’s daily life. There are many different types of paper with different uses. Today, let’s join Thuan Phat Hung to learn more about coated papers and their applications.
WHAT IS COATED PAPER?
Coated paper is paper coated with kaolin or similar material. The paper surface is flat and smooth, with good light absorption and opacity. Besides, this type of paper is also well ink-catching and evenly ink-absorbing. Thanks to these advantages, Couche paper is very popular in the printing field, especially printing publications such as Catalogs, Namecards, Brochures, etc. which require sharp images with high quality.
There are two main types of coated paper:
- Couche Gloss paper is a type of paper with a glossy surface that catches light well. People often use this material in Offset printing using Pigment UV ink. Because the surface is too glossy, it is impossible to write on the surface.
- Couche Matt paper has a smoother surface than Couche Gloss paper. Therefore, it is possible to write words on their surface. This type of paper can be used for all types of ink. When printing with Couche Matt paper, it will create a more comfortable feeling and reduce eye strain for readers. However, this type of paper usually takes longer to dry when printing ink than other Couche paper lines.
ADVANTAGES OF COATED PAPER:
- Very convenient and well reusable
- Not harmful to human health
- Clean and not warped surface
- Difficult to be torn
- Moisture-proof, waterproof, dust-proof
- Well ink-catching, beautiful printing colors
- Applicable in many fields
- Can be coated on one or both sides of the paper
CHARACTERISTICS OF COATED PAPER
Coated paper is glossy or matte, bright and produces eye-catching printing colors. When printing products on this material, the effect is very good. Coated paper combined with Offset printing technology creates good color contrast and sharp images. Common paper brightness is from 68 to 98 % ISO. Paper weight ranges from 35 to 350 gsm. However, the most common level is between 100 and 120 gsm.
Coated paper is usually quite thick and has a sturdier surface than other types of paper on the market. This makes this type of paper slightly more expensive. Therefore, they are used to print high-end products with perfect quality.
APPLICATIONS OF COATED PAPER
- Couche paper: A type of paper with a glossy or matte, smooth surface, giving good printing effects, integrated with the use of offset printing technology. The product has good color contrast, beautiful images, eye-catching and bright printing, suitable for Offset printing technology.
- Bristol paper (Art Board): Paper that is smooth on both sides, glossy and when printed, it produces beautiful colors, well ink-catching, suitable for offset printing technology. They are often used for publications that require high hardness such as book covers, notebook covers, high-end boxes, etc.
- Crystal paper: has one side that is shiny as if covered with a layer of glue, the other side is rough. Often they are used as an intermediate between Bristol paper and Couche paper. Crystal paper is usually used to print cardboard boxes, posters, catalogs, book covers, etc.
- Ivory paper: coated on one side, the other side is rough white, has higher hardness than Bristol. They are often used to print packaging, medicine boxes, cosmetic boxes, notebook covers, etc.
- Duplex paper: one side is white and smooth, the other side is dark like cardboard. The printed color is less clear than other types of paper. It is often used to produce large boxes requiring stiffness and strength, so it is very suitable for packaging.
